Abstract

Affinity chromatography-purified elderberry (Sambu cus nigra L.) seed proteins strongly inhibited protein synthesis and displayed the 28S rRNA N-glycosidase activity characteristic of all types of ribosome inactivating proteins (RIPs). Western blot analysis revealed several proteins that reacted with antibodies raised against the novel non-toxic type 2 ribosome inactivating protein nigrin b isolated from elder bark, thus indicating the presence of a new type 2 RIP.
