Abstract

The distribution of thermal stresses in a solidifying metal slab is calculated. The solid is regarded as elastic/perfectly plastic with a yield stress which is a linear function of temperature and which is zero at the solidification temperature. The slab is constrained against bending but otherwise free of tractions; the temperature distribution within the solid is taken as that given by Neumann's solution for solidification with constant surface temperature. The problem is motivated by consideration of the early stage of solidification of a metal casting in a square mould.
