Abstract

We have performed ultrasonic measurements of the filled skutterudite compound ${\mathrm{NdFe}}_{4}{\mathrm{P}}_{12}$ to investigate the elastic properties and $4f$ ground state of Nd ions split by the crystalline electric-field (CEF) effect. A pronounced elastic softening towards low temperatures was observed in the temperature dependence of the elastic constants ${C}_{11},$ ${(C}_{11}\ensuremath{-}{C}_{12})/2,$ and ${C}_{44}.$ From the present results the CEF ground state of Nd ions and their low-temperature behavior are discussed in connection with the CEF ground state being degenerate with a quadrupolar moment.
