Abstract
Most factory layouts based on stable markets. Companies usually do not consider further development or growth processes, which leads to inefficiencies. Literature reviews have shown, that living systems have the ability to efficiently and flexibly cope with short- and long-term changes. Consequently, this paper shows firstly, as an overview of own studies, new efficient approaches as examples for factory and material flow planning, using biomimetics. Secondly and as the focus of the paper, approaches for the efficiency measurement and assessment are analyzed and examined for their suitability to the context of different factory layouts and their material flows. Based on these results, traditional and bio-inspired factory layouts should be comparable in terms of their efficiency figures.
