Abstract
The Cuban Labor movement has origins in a workers' union called Confederación Nacional Obrera de Cuba (CNOC). The union was founded in 1925 under communist leadership. The organization's goal was to unionize 200 thousand Cuban workers. Of great importance was the fact that organization was aimed at rural populations rather than urban workers. Poor farmers and agricultural/migratory workers were in great need of emancipation and deprived of socioeconomic rights. Especially the workers of the sugar industry were eager to participate in the movement. Thanks to them, the organization saw rapid development in the early 30's. The sugar industry workers were very important in shaping the movement. Despite involvement in agriculture they had a lot in common with urban workers which greatly contributed to the development of the CNOC.
