Abstract

Aim: to address the phenomenon of child abuse in Puerto Rico from a critical look towards the Government after the implementation of strategies to work with intervention processes, analyzing how the Department of the Family (DF), the Division of the Administration of Families and Children (ADFAN) and the laws that make up the public policy on the matter have been constituted. Results: the measures taken by the Government of Puerto Rico under different leaders, both belonging to the DPP and the PNP, did not show to be effective nor did they decrease the incidence of cases of abuse on the island. Conclusions: the work carried out by the DF and ADFAN is essential for the intervention processes, although a more human and multidisciplinary approach is necessary, one in which the health professionals can work with the family as an integrated system where the human being has a meaning, recognizing their parents as a fundamental part of themselves.
