Abstract

Silk is a natural protein fiber that is woven into textiles. There are various types of silk, but the one commonly used is silk that comes from the cocoons of silkworm larvae that feed on mulberry leaves. One of the natural silk areas in South Sulawesi is Kabuoaten Soppeng. This study aims to examine how the existence of natural silk in Soppeng Regency and the various factors supporting and inhibiting its development. This research is a library research and the data sources are journals or related articles. The data collection method is the method of documentation and data analysis used is bibliographic analysis. The results showed that silkworms were very essential in Soppeng Regency, including silkworm cultivation which had been carried out for a long time, silkworms improved the community's economy and government participation in developing community silkworm businesses. However, currently there are only a few silkworm farmers left in the area due to the decline in silk thread production due to several factors such as traditional tools, difficulty supplying seeds, land conversion, disease attacks and others
