Abstract

The author has undertaken a difficult and perhaps overly ambitious task: to provide a theoretical framework for the rapidly expanding, but loosely organized set of operations commonly grouped under the rubric of therapeutic community. By wedding a theoretical model based on ego psychology to some aspects of small group theory, Dr. Edelson attempts to bring order to what has been frequently a set of ad hoc prescriptions cast in a humanistic framework. The concepts of Federn and Fairbairn are central as are, on the other side of the theoretical street, the work of Bion and Redl. Much of Dr. Edelson's text is taken up with excellent brief summaries of ego psychology and, in this respect, it may be a useful introductory text for the beginning psychiatric resident.
