Abstract
An obligate egg diapause occurs in Chorthippus brunneus just before blastokinesis. Further development after diapause has been broken is associated with a rapid absorption of water, but, contrary to the usual pattern for Acrididae, the end of diapause and the increase in water uptake are not closely connected: eggs that have not broken diapause also absorb water after chilling. Additional water absorption is not essential for post-diapause development. Water uptake appears to be a function of viable eggs, but a hindrance to absorption develops by anatrepsis, which can be reduced by chilling, regardless of whether or not diapause is broken.
