Abstract

In this work, high cycle fatigue test programs based on staircase schemes at multiple mean stress levels are analyzed statistically with respect to their capability of estimating the parameters of a parameterized probabilistic Haigh diagram. Given a fixed number of tests, the influence of the used test specimen geometry, number of mean stress levels, step size and initial stresses are investigated. The central result shows that test programs which contain tests with both smooth and notched specimens lead to a considerable improvement of the fatigue strength scatter estimate compared to test programs using only one test specimen geometry.
