Abstract

Yb-Bi co-doped phosphate glasses were prepared by a melt-quenching technique. The effects of B2O3, Al2O3 and Y2O3 addition on the absorption spectra, broadband emission intensity and measured fluorescence lifetime were investigated. The results have shown that a certain amount of B2O3, Al2O3 and Y2O3 addition was highly efficient for enhancing the near-infrared (NIR) luminescence. Using the NIR emission spectra and the measured fluorescence lifetime, full width at half maxima (FWHM) and stimulated emission cross-section (σem) were evaluated. The results indicate B2O3, Al2O3 and Y2O3 can be introduced into the Yb-Bi co-doped phosphate glass matrix to obtain good optical properties.
