Abstract

A theoretical model of the propagation and compression of femtosecond fundamental solitons in optical fibres with varying dispersion, is developed. Simple analytical expressions describing pulse duration and carrier frequency changes in optical fibre of constant and varying diameter are obtained. Fibre profile, which allows maximum pulse compression to be achieved, is determined.
