Abstract

Standing oestrus in West African dwarf goats averaged 31.1 ± 1.7 h. Oestrus duration was not affected by time of day, although significantly more does ( P<0.05) were first observed in oestrus during the morning and evening than in the afternoon. Oestrus duration was significantly longer ( P<0.05) during the early dry and late dry seasons (36.1 h and 32.8 h respectively) than during the early rainy and late rainy seasons (19.8 h and 22.4 h respectively). Oestrus during breeding heat was significantly shorter ( P<0.05) than during postpartum heat.
