Abstract

This study develops and tests a structural equation model of the effects of response satisfaction, work dependency, and proximity on the frequency of communication in organizations. While the three independent variables have been frequently examined in the literature, seldom has one study explored them simultaneously with the sort of causal modeling framework used here. The model was tested on data gathered from a large retail store (N = 86) which was particularly well suited to isolate the effects of the major variables examined in this study. Three different data gathering strategies were used to generate the multiple indicators of the latent variables contained in the model. The results for the measurement model were quite supportive of these procedures. Most importantly, the results were supportive of the theoretical framework developed here, suggesting that the model tested here provides a good fit to the system of observed intercorrelations.
