Abstract

This document describes an experimental set-up based on the use of fumigation cabinets. Experimental apparatus, and experimental design are discussed in detail. Alfalfa was the plant species most extensively tested. Results were: plants were more resistant to SO/sub 2/ at temperatures below 40/sup 0/F than at higher temperatures; resistance to SO/sub 2/ decreased as relative humidity increased; plants with ample water supply were more susceptible to SO/sub 2/ injury; and susceptibility to SO/sub 2/ injury varies with age of the plant. Animal studies used guinea pigs, mice, grasshoppers and cockroaches. Differences in susceptibility were noted between life stages of different species and between vertebrates and invertebrates.
