Abstract

The effects of simulated rain and dew on the toxicity of ULV sprays of certain insecticide formulations to the boll worm, Heliothis zea (Boddie), and boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis Boheman, were investigated. Formulations compared were Azodrin® (3-hydroxy- N -methyl- cis -crotonamide dimethyl phosphate, 5 lb/gal water miscible), Azodrin (4.8 lb/gal low-volume concentrate), azinphosmethyl (2 lb/gal EC), azinphosmethyl (2 lb/gal ULV), methyl parathion (80% T)-methyl parathion (4 lb/gal EC), malathion (96.5% T), and Strobane® (terpene polychlorinates, 65% chlorine) + methyl parathion (4 lb + 4 lb/gal EC). Results indicate that ULV sprays of water-miscible formulations were less toxic to the boll worm and boll weevil than immiscible formulations when subjected to rain and dew. Certain additives showed promise for enhancing the resistance to rain of an Azodrin formulation.
