Abstract

Based upon data concerning contour orientation and interaction and the stimulus variables affecting the Mueller-Lyer illusion, an explanation for the illusion was advanced. Predictions made for the effects of prolonged fixation of each of the component figures were experimentally confirmed. The theoretical rationale proposed was discussed in terms of possible difficulties which require further empirical investigation.
