Abstract

Introduction: Myopia is often associated with an increase in axial length (AL) and its pathophysiology involves oxidative stress. Treatments of myopia consist of correction using spectacle, refractive surgery, and supplements. Nigella sativa (NS) is a traditional medicinal plant rich in antioxidants. This study aims to determine the effects of Nigella sativa extract (NSE) on AL changes in myopic children.
 Materials and Methods: This was a randomized controlled trial with double blinds involving 35 children with varying degrees of myopia aged 12-18 years old. Subjects were randomized and divided to receive either a placebo or NSE and instructed to consume twice capsules/day. AL elongation was evaluated at week 0, 6, and 12.
 Results: In baseline examination, the average AL of ENS group was measured at 24,73 mm and placebo group at 25,04 mm. After 12 weeks of follow-up, average AL changes were measured at 0,06 mm (60 µm) and 0,08 mm (80 µm) in NSE and placebo group, respectively. There was a significant difference in AL changes between both groups (p<0,036).
 Conclusion: Dietary consumption of NSE may have a suppressive effect on AL elongation. There was a significant difference in AL changes between the NSE and placebo group in 12 weeks of follow-up.
