Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of medicinal plant extracts on angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activities. Among the fifty medicinal plant extracts, Morus alba Linne, Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina Nakai and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi extracts showed strong ACE inhibitory activities. The inhibitory activities of extracts which Morus alba Linne, Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina Nakai and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi were 50.3%, 56.9%, 48.1%, respectively. Systolic blood pressure was significantly decreased in the group fed Morus alba Linne extracts (21.1 mmHg), Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina Nakai extracts (20.4 mmHg), Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi extracts (26.3 mmHg) compared to control group. Diastolic blood pressure was significantly decreased in the group fed Morus alba Linne extracts (11.7 mmHg), Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi extracts (14.1 mmHg) compared to control group (P<0.05). it is expected that follow up study of medicinal plant through developing processed food and evaluation of their functional properties would provide useful information as a source of medicinal foods.
