Abstract

Background and Aims: Acyl-CoA:diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 (DGAT1) is the rate limiting enzyme catalyzing the reaction of diglyceride with fatty acid to generate triglyceride (TG). Global deficiency of DGAT1 in apolipoprotein E-knockout (ApoE-/-) mice protects from atherosclerosis development by increasing macrophage cholesterol efflux and reducing intestinal cholesterol absorption in these animals. We have previously shown that hematopoietic DGAT1 deficiency has little effect on atherosclerosis in mice. In the current study, we therefore investigated the consequences of intestinal DGAT1 deficiency on atherogenesis.
