Abstract

A recent report from this laboratory demonstrated histological differences in the healing of bony defects filled with the hemostats Surgicel, Gelfoam, or bone wax. In an effort to investigate factors inherent in these hemostats that might affect subsequent wound healing, their effects on the pH of various body fluids were evaluated in vitro. Surgicel was the only hemostat to cause a significant decrease in pH of heparinized blood, plasma, and serum. Of these hemostats, Surgicel has previously been shown to induce the most severe inflammatory reaction.
