Abstract

A study was made of the effects of two fungicides, mancozeb and maneb, at concentrations of about 2.0 to 10.0 kg/ha on an agricultural soil of silty loam texture. Parameters monitored included total platable populations, numbers of aerobic N2‐fixing bacteria, and number denitrifying and nitrifying bacteria. Total platable fungal populations, denitrifying bacteria and aerobic diazotrophs were significantly decreased in the presence of agricultural doses of mancozeb. However the presence maneb enhanced the fungal microflora, diazotrophic populations and nitrite‐oxidizing bacteria. Total platable bacteria were not affected by the addition of mancozeb or maneb, showing that some microbial groups can tolerate agricultural doses of these fungicides.
