Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos da inclusão de torta de dendê na dieta sobre o consumo, a digestibilidade das dietas e o desempenho de novilhas leiteiras. Utilizaram-se 16 novilhas leiteiras mestiças Holandês × Zebu, com média de 13 meses de idade e peso vivo inicial de 183,4±32,5 kg, distribuídas em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro níveis de torta de dendê (0; 11,9; 22,9 e 34,2% da matéria seca total), cada um com quatro repetições. Avaliaram-se os consumos de matéria seca (MS), proteína bruta (PB), fibra em detergente neutro (FDN), carboidratos não-fibrosos (CNF), extrato etéreo (EE) e nutrientes digestíveis totais (NDT) e as digestibilidades aparentes da MS, PB, FDN, CNF e EE. Houve redução linear no consumo de MS, PB, FDN, CNF e NDT. A digestibilidade aparente da MS e FDN reduziu com a inclusão da torta de dendê na dieta, enquanto a de PB e dos CNF sofreu efeito quadrático. A inclusão de torta de dendê nas dietas promoveu aumento linear da digestibilidade aparente do extrato etéreo. O ganho de peso reduziu linearmente com a inclusão de torta de dendê na dieta, sendo observados valores de 1,06; 0,99; 0,89 e 0,54 kg/dia para as dietas contendo 0; 11,9; 22,9 ou 34,2% de torta de dendê na dieta total, respectivamente. A conversão alimentar não foi afetada pelos níveis de inclusão de torta de dendê na dieta. A inclusão de torta de dendê na dieta reduz o consumo de nutrientes e o desempenho de novilhas leiteiras em crescimento, porém, quando utilizada em níveis de até 24,6% da dieta total, proporciona ganho de peso compatível com os obtidos em programas de recria visando à parição aos 24 meses de idade.

The apparent digestibility (AD) of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and essential amino acids (EAA) in five selected feedstuffs was evaluated in hybrid catfish and Nile tilapia. The AD of DM, OM and CP in cassava leaf meal (CLM) was lower (P 0.05). The AD of most EAA was higher in SSH (P 0.05). The AD of DM and OM in CLM was higher (P < 0.05) in hybrid catfish than in Nile tilapia, while there was no difference in the AD of CP in CLM between fish species. The AD of DM, OM, CP and EAA among GNM, SBM, SSH and SHM did not differ between hybrid catfish and Nile tilapia. In conclusion, there were only small differences in the nutritional properties between the selected feedstuffs in both fish species. Most EAA in the selected feedstuffs were equally well utilized by hybrid catfish and Nile tilapia.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de cinco níveis de concentrados (25,0; 37,5; 50,0; 62,5; e 75,0%) sobre os consumos e as digestibilidades aparentes totais e parciais da matéria seca (MS), matéria orgânica (MO), proteína bruta (PB), do extrato etéreo (EE), dos carboidratos totais (CHO) e da fibra em detergente neutro (FDN). Cinco novilhos F1 Limousin x Nelore, não-castrados, com peso médio inicial de 279 kg, fistulados no rúmen, abomaso e íleo, foram usados em um delineamento quadrado latino 5 x 5, com cinco tratamentos, cinco períodos experimentais e cinco animais. Cada período teve duração de 14 dias - 10 dias para adaptação dos animais à ração e quatro dias para coleta de fezes e de digestas de abomaso e íleo. Utilizou-se o óxido crômico em duas doses de 10 g/dia, como indicador, para medir os fluxos de nutrientes no trato digestivo. Os consumos de EE e NDT aumentaram e o de FDN diminuiu linearmente com o incremento dos níveis de concentrados das rações. O aumento de níveis de concentrado na MS da ração resultou em acréscimos lineares nas digestilidades totais de MS, MO, PB, EE e CHO. A digestibilidade aparente total de FDN e as digestões aparentes ruminais de MS, MO, PB, CHO e FDN não foram influenciadas pelos níveis de concentrado nas rações, observando-se médias de 45,91; 54,45; 64,67; -9,92; 79,29; e 95,90%, respectivamente. Conclui-se que o aumento dos níveis de concentrado nas rações não alterou os locais de digestão dos nutrientes.

The effect of different dietary structural carbohydrate (SC) to nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) ratios on fiber degradation, digestion, flow, apparent digestibility and rumen fluid characteristics was studied with a design using 18 wethers fitted with permanent rumen and duodenum cannulae. All sheep were divided into six groups randomly, receiving six diets with varying SC to NSC ratios. All diets contained the same proportion of wheat straw and concentrate. The dietary SC to NSC ratios were adjusted by adding cornstarch to the concentrate supplements. The duodenal and fecal flows of dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), hemicellulose (HC) and cellulose (CEL) were estimated using chromium-mordanted wheat straw as a flow marker. The degradation parameters of wheat straw DM, NDF, ADF, HC and CEL were determined by incubating the ground wheat straw in nylon bags in the rumen for different periods of time. There was no effect (p>0.05) of the different dietary SC to NSC ratios on rumen pH or NH3-N, but acetate, propionate and butyrate concentrations were significantly affected (p<0.05 or p<0.01) by dietary SC to NSC ratios in the rumen fluid. When the dietary SC to NSC ratio was 2.86, the highest rumen degradability of wheat straw DM, NDF, ADF and CEL was found, but the highest apparent rumen digestibilities of DM, NDF, ADF, HC and CEL occurred at a 2.64 SC to NSC ratio. However, because of compensatory digestion in the hindgut, the apparent digestibilities of DM, NDF, ADF, HC and CEL were highest when the dietary SC to NSC ratio was 2.40. In conclusion, there is a optimal range of dietary SC to NSC ratios (between 2.86 and 2.40) that is beneficial to maximize wheat straw fiber degradation and apparent digestibility. (Asian-Aust. J. This study investigated the effects of supplementing bee pollen (BP) in high-concentrate diets (HCD) on the health status and production performance of goats. Twenty Jintang Black goats, similar age and weighing 33.36 ± 1.34 kg, were randomly assigned to the CON group (basal diet) and the BP group (basal diet + 0.5% BP) for a 30-day feeding trial. Results indicated that BP supplementation significantly increased average daily gain by 36.55% (p < 0.05), and decreased Feed-to-Gain ratio (p < 0.05) of goats. Apparent digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, and neutral detergent fiber was also significantly improved (p < 0.05). Regarding rumen fermentation parameters, BP significantly increased valeric acid concentration, reduced acetate-to-propionic acid ratio, and elevated microbial protein production. From the perspective of rumen microbial community, BP increased the diversity and evenness of rumen microbial. The relative abundance of Actinobacteriota, Fibrobacterota, Olsenella, Fibrobacter, Lachnospiraceae_NK3A20_group, and Succiniclasticum was significantly higher in the BP group than in the CON group (p < 0.05). In terms of metabolism, BP exerted positive effects on indicators related to hepatocyte damage, muscle injury, lipid metabolism, protein metabolism, and endotoxin levels. For immune function, BP enhanced immune responses by reducing interleukin (IL)-1β and Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α) levels (p < 0.05) and increasing immunoglobulin levels (p < 0.05), thereby improving overall immunity. Moreover, BP significantly enhanced the body's antioxidant capacity by increasing the activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) (p < 0.05). Correlation analysis revealed that major acute-phase protein, TNF-α, and IL-1β all exhibited significant negative correlations with certain differential microorganisms (p < 0.05). In conclusion, 0.5% BP supplementation in HCD improves goat production performance by optimizing rumen fermentation and microbial community, enhancing immunity and antioxidant capacity, and regulating metabolic function, providing a theoretical basis for BP application in ruminant production under high-concentrate feeding conditions.

The objective of the study was to determine the energy value and apparent digestibility of kikuyu grass and annual ryegrass using exogenous digestive enzymes (EDE), and to propose prediction equations for apparent metabolizable energy (AME) to estimate the energy values of grasses for laying hens. A total of 144 Hisex Brown layers were allocated in a completely randomized design within a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement, comprising four levels of kikuyu grass or annual ryegrass substitution: 0, 30, 60, and 90 g/kg, with or without EDE. The birds were 72 weeks old in the kikuyu grass experiment and 95 weeks old in the annual ryegrass experiment. A linear decrease was observed in the values of AME, apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM), energy, and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of the diets as the level of grass substitution increased (P < 0.05). The digesta passage time reduced linearly with the increase in the level of grass substitution (P < 0.05). The apparent digestibility of the ashes increased in the treatments that received kikuyu grass and at the level of 60 g/kg of ryegrass (P < 0.05). The apparent digestibility of crude protein (CP) improved in diets containing ryegrass (P < 0.05). The EDE improved the apparent digestibility of NDF and CP in kikuyu grass diets and CP in ryegrass diets (P < 0.05). The prediction equations utilizing two predictors, formed by gross energy (GE) and acid detergent fiber (ADF), or digested GE and DM, increased R2. Ether extract shows a strong correlation with the prediction of AME content in grasses. The values of nitrogen corrected AME (AMEn) for kikuyu were 261.5 kcal/g, and 339.3 kcal/kg for ryegrass, in natural matter (NM). The standardized AME (AMEs) of kikuyu was 267.6 kcal/kg, and 341.1 kcal/kg for ryegrass, in NM. The energy value and digestibility of ryegrass were higher than kikuyu grass, due to the lower amount of NDF and lignin in its composition. The use of exogenous digestive enzymes did not increase the AME value of the grasses. The prediction equations of AME can be used to estimate the energy value of grasses for laying hens.

Five canulated (rumen and proximal duodenum) mature Holstein cows, averaging 200 days in milk, were used in a 5x5 Latin square design to evaluate: dry matter intake, nutrient digestibility and ruminal parameters of diets containing cottonseed. The treatments were T0, T6, T12, T18 e T24 corresponding to 0%, 6%, 12%, 18%, 24% of cottonseed in the diet (Dry Matter basis). The cows were fed 40% concentrate and 60% corn silage. Milk production (kg/day) and milk protein (g/day) had a quadratic response while fat corrected milk production had a quadratic tendency. There was a tendency to reduce dry matter and organic matter intake. Dry matter apparent digestibility was reduced (P < 0.05) linearly. Ether extract apparent digestibility was increased (P < 0.05) linearly. Apparent digestibility of crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and crude energy were not altered. Acid detergent fiber apparent digestibility was reduced (P < 0.05) linearly. Ruminal pH and total volatile fatty acids did not differ among treatments. Acetate and propionate concentration and acetate propionate ratio had a quadratic response while butyrate was reduced (P < 0.05) linearly. The effective degradability of dry matter in the passage rates of 2%, 5% and 8%/h, as well as soluble fraction and insoluble in water were not changed, although the degradability of insoluble fraction decreased linearly and the potential degradability increased linearly.

An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of dietary molasses distillers condensed soluble (MDCS) on nutrients digestibility, performance, carcass traits and some blood biological parameters in Lori male lambs. A total of 24 male lambs (aged 8 months, 31.16±1.10 kg) were randomly assigned to each of 4 dietary treatments with 6 replicate. The experimental animals were daily offered a basal diet with 0, 5, 10 and 15 percentage of MDCS/Kg DM of total ration, which were mixed with wheat straw and alfalfa hay. The results of the study indicated that the digestibility of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) of alfalfa hay were increased (P<0.05) by using the MDCS. The invivo apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and NDF of experimental diets were increased (P<0.05) by incorporation of MDCS at the level of 15%. There were no significant differences among treatments in average daily gain (ADG), dry matter intake (DMI), carcass characteristics and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Serum metabolites and liver enzymes were also not affected due to incorporation of MDCS in the diets. In conclusion, MDCS can be used as a source of protein and energy for ruminants, which can be mixed with hay or concentrate and could safely be used as a feed ingredient up to 15% to the male lamb’s diet without any detrimental effects. Dairy cows in Thailand are Holstein Friesian crossbreds (87.5% HF) and it is generally accepted that current milk yields of these cows are below their potential. The main reason for the low milk production of these dairy cows in Thailand is related to the prevailing environmental conditions. The tropical climate is an important constraint for milk production because of two main reasons. First, it is well known that the digestibility of forages is negatively affected by tropical conditions. Unfavorable growth conditions can result in low contents of protein and minerals in the plant and high amounts of so called structural carbohydrates. Secondly, heat stress affects animal performance by affecting feed intake. The objectives of this thesis were to provide a basis for improvement of milk production in small farm holders in Thailand through supplementation of protein and salt (NaCl). Four experimental objectives were identified for this research, and it was anticipated that the outcome of the research can be applied so as to improve dairy production in Thailand and potentially other countries where dairy cows are maintained under tropical conditions. In Chapter 2, a preliminary investigation is described into the relationship between ration composition and milk production of dairy cows in Thailand. The positive correlation between milk yield and crude protein (CP) intake was high during early lactation (r = 0.65). Cows consumed 5 and 8% greater CP than requirement during early- and mid-lactation, respectively. Interestingly, significant positive correlations were found between Na intake and milk yield. This observations is somewhat difficult to explain as Na intake was highly correlated with concentrate intake (r = 0.66). In other words, the increased milk yield may been related to a higher intake of Na but this was confounded with the amount of concentrate intake. In conclusion, protein, non-fibre carbohydrates and Na intake may have limited milk production by dairy cows on the Thai farms participating in the current study. The study in Chapter 3 investigated the Na requirement of lactating dairy cows under tropical conditions by measuring Na in saliva, milk and faeces. The Na intake did not change the concentrations of Na and K in milk, faeces and serum, but did affect sodium concentration in the saliva. This observation was corroborated by the salivary Na and K concentrations with the cows on the low NaCl diet having a salivary Na concentrations 20 mmol/L (P In Chapter 4, the assessment of the Na requirement of heat stressed lactating cows is hindered by accurate estimates of the Na losses through sweat. Direct studies, therefore, are needed on the time course of healthy animals to become Na depleted and the subsequent rate of repletion. The rate of Na depletion and subsequent rate of Na repletion with two levels of dietary Na to lactating dairy cows housed under tropical conditions was investigated using the salivary Na/K. The 12 lactating cows rapidly developed clinical signs of Na deficiency, including pica, polyuria and polydipsia, reduced body weight and reduced milk yield when fed a Na-low (0.33 g/kg DM) ration during 3 weeks. Deficiency symptoms were associated with a rapid decrease in salivary Na/K ratio to 6. A daily Na intake of heat-stressed lactating cows to a ration intake of 1.6 g Na/kg DM was insufficient to restore Na deficiency. One week was sufficient to deplete heat-stressed lactating cows of Na allowing for rapid dose-response studies utilizing the salivary Na/K ratio as a parameter for Na status of cows under tropical conditions. In Chapter 5, an experiment is reported where the effects of two levels of dietary CP in concentrates with similar proportions of rumen undegradable protein (RUP) on rumen metabolism, milk yield and composition in mid lactating cows was investigated. Concentrate feeds were formulated to provide low dietary CP [17.3%; LCP] or high dietary CP [19.0%; HCP]. The proportion of rumen degradable protein and RUP was 61% and 39% in both diets, respectively. Diets were isocaloric in terms of net energy for lactation. Milk yield, milk lactose yield, dry matter intake (DMI), and apparent digestibility of DM, CP and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) were greater in cows fed the HCP than in those fed the LCP. Concentration of blood urea nitrogen (N) was elevated in cows fed HCP diets. Rumen ammonia-N concentration and pH tended to increase in cows fed the HCP diet. Rumen microorganism counts and volatile fatty acids levels in the rumen did not differ between treatments. In conclusion, increasing CP content in mid-lactating cow was beneficial to increase DMI, apparent digestibility of DM, CP and NDF and therefore milk yield. In Chapter 6, the results of the experimental studies reported in this thesis are discussed in light of Thai dairy production conditions.

The objective of the experiment was to study the effects of replacing corn silage (CS) with cassava foliage silage (CFS) – using the upper third of the foliage – on intake and nutrient digestibility. Twelve lactating dairy cows were used in a randomized block design to evaluated intake and digestibility. The levels of replacement of CS with CFS were 0, 20, 40 and 60%. The parameters studied were: dry matter intake (DMI), organic matter intake (OMI), neutral detergent fiber intake (NDFI), indigestible neutral detergent fiber intake (INDFI), apparent digestibility of dry matter (ADDM), apparent digestibility of organic matter (ADOM), apparent digestibility of crude protein (ADCP), apparent digestibility of neutral detergent fiber (ADNDF), apparent digestibility of total carbohydrates (ADTC) and apparent digestibility of non-fiber carbohydrates (ADNFC). The replacement of CS with different levels of the upper third of cassava foliage silage (CFS) had no effect in practically any of evaluated variables (p > 0.05). However, ADCP (p < 0.01) decreased as the levels of replacement were increased. The inclusion of CFS did not alter the intake or digestibility of nutrients, except for ADCP. In spite of the negative effect on the apparent digestibility of protein, CFS can partially replace CS in the diet of lactating dairy cows.

Our objectives with this study were 1) to evaluate the effects of implementing different high- forage backgrounding (HFB) in early-maturing Nellore bulls as an alternative strategy to conventional early mature bulls’ system, and 2) to evaluate the effect of increasing concentrate levels in AGRI-002E sorghum silage (SS)-based diets on nutrient intake and digestibility, ruminal pH and ammonia concentration, Nitrogen (N) balance, efficiency of microbial protein synthesis, and in situ degradability of complete diets. For the first objective, forty young Nellore bulls, with an initial body weight (BW) of 265.25 ± 5 kg and an average age of 7 ± 1 month were used. The bulls were randomly allotted to four treatment groups with different HFB lengths (0, 28, 56, and 84 days), followed by a 14-day step-up adaptation period, and a high- concentrate finishing phase (140, 112, 84, and 56 days respectively). The HFB diet consisted of 800 g/kg of sorghum silage and 200 g/kg of concentrate, while the finishing diet contained 200 g/kg of corn silage and 800 g/kg of concentrate. Two digestibility trials were conducted for each treatment to estimate apparent digestibilities in both HFB and finishing phases. Bulls were weighed at the beginning and end of each phase to measure shrunk BW (SBW) and average daily gains (ADG). At the end of the experiment, all bulls were slaughtered to evaluate carcass characteristics. For the second objective, five rumen-cannulated Nellore bulls received five dietary treatments in a 5×5 Latin square experimental design, with diets containing 0, 200, 400, 600, and 800 g of concentrate/kg on a DM basis. Each period lasted 24 days, with 17 days for dietary adaptation and 7 days for data collection. In situ degradability assays, total feces and urine collection, and omasal and ruminal digesta collection were performed to estimate nutrient intake, digestibility, N balance, and ruminal parameters. In the first study, HFB did not influence nutrient intake, apparent digestibility, or performance during the backgrounding phase. However, during the finishing phase, increased HFB length improved the apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), and non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC). The final SBW, carcass weight, and carcass gain were highest in the 0- day HFB group and lowest in the 84-day HFB group. Hot and cold carcass dressings were similar among the 0, 28, and 56-day HFB groups but lower in the 84-day HFB group. In conclusion, implementing HFB improves nutrient digestibility but does not affect nutrient intake, ADG, or gain-to-feed ratio during the finishing phase. While HFB may lead to a decrease in overall performance, both 28 and 56-day HFB lengths yield similar results in SBW, carcass weight, and carcass gain, suggesting a compensatory mechanism. In the second study, increasing concentrate levels in SS-based diets led to linear increases in the intake of DM, OM, CP, and ether extract (EE), with neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and starch intake showing quadratic responses. Ruminal digestibility of DM, OM, and CP exhibited quadratic responses, while NDF digestibility decreased linearly. Apparent total-tract digestibility of DM, OM, and EE increased linearly, whereas NDF and CP digestibility decreased linearly. Increasing concentrate levels improved in situ ruminal degradation parameters and nitrogen utilization, with higher total volatile fatty acids and microbial protein synthesis efficiency. The findings indicate that AGRI-002E sorghum silage is effective as a fiber source for high-concentrate diets, but its effectiveness is limited without concentrate supplementation. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of the level of corn dry distillers grains with solubles (CDDGS) supplementation on growing performance, blood metabolites, digestion characteristics and ruminal fermentation patterns in steers grazing dormant forage. In Exp. 1, of growth performance, 120 steers (204±5 kg initial body weight [BW]) were distributed randomly into 3 groups (each of 40 steers), which were provided with the following levels of CDDGS supplement: 0%, 0.25%, or 0.50% BW. All groups of steers were grazed for 30 days in each of 3 grazing periods (March, April, and May). Approximately 1,000 ha of the land was divided with electric fencing into 3 equally sized pastures (333 ha in size). Blood samples were collected monthly from 20 steers in each grazing group for analysis of glucose (G), urea-nitrogen (UN) and non-esterified fatty acids. Final BW, average daily gain (ADG) and supplement conversion (CDDGS-C) increased with increasing levels of CDDGS supplementation (p<0.05).The CDDGS supplementation also increased the plasma G and UN concentrations (p<0.05). In Exp. 2, of digestive metabolism, 9 ruminally cannulated steers (BW = 350±3 kg) were distributed, following a completely randomized design, into groups of three in each pasture. The ruminally cannulated steers were provided the same levels of CDDGS supplementation as in the growing performance study (0%, 0.25%, and 0.50% BW), and they grazed along with the other 40 steers throughout the grazing periods. The dry matter intake, crude protein intake, neutral detergent fiber intake (NDFI), apparent digestibility of dry matter (ADDM), crude protein (ADCP) and neutral detergent fiber (ADNDF) increased with increasing levels of CDDGS supplementation (p<0.05). The ruminal degradation rates of CP (kdCP), NDF (kdNDF) and passage rate (kp) also increased with increasing levels of CDDGS supplementation (p<0.05). Ruminal ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) and propionate concentrations also increased with increasing levels of CDDGS supplementation (p<0.05). However, acetate concentrations decreased with increasing levels of CDDGS supplementation (p<0.05). Liquid dilution rate increased with increasing levels of CDDGS supplementation but ruminal liquid volume decreased (p<0.05). On the basis of these findings, we can conclude that CDDGS supplementation enhanced the productive performance of cattle grazing native rangeland without negatively affecting forage intake, glucose and urea-nitrogen blood concentrations, ruminal degradation and ruminal fermentation patterns.

Simple SummaryThis study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with Bacillus megaterium 1259 (BM1259) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation, and blood biochemical parameters in Holstein bull calves. The results demonstrated that the addition of BM1259 to the diets can significantly improve the growth performance and elevate the apparent digestibility of crude protein and neutral detergent fiber. Moreover, supplementation with BM1259 ameliorated rumen fermentation and reduced the emission of both ammoniacal nitrogen and sulfuretted hydrogen in feces and urine. In addition, adding 12 g/head/day of BM1259 had no adverse effect on blood biochemical parameters and the health status of Holstein bull calves. This study demonstrates that BM1259 can be applied as a potential microecologics to improve production performance and nitrogen utilization in Holstein bull calves.Bacillus megaterium is an ideal microecologics in the feed industry. BM1259 was already isolated from chicken manure and the whole-genome sequencing was also analyzed in our previous study. However, few studies concentrated on dietary supplementation with BM1259 in young ruminants and especially its effect on Holstein bull calves have not been reported. Hence, this experiment was conducted with the aim to evaluate the effects of BM1259 on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation, and blood biochemical parameters in Holstein bull calves. Twenty-four healthy Holstein bull calves with the initial age of 90 days old and a similar body weight (115 ± 6.5 kg) were selected and randomly allocated into two groups with one Holstein bull calf in each pen (2.5 m × 2.2 m). Holstein bull calves in the control group (COG) were fed a basal total mixed ration (TMR), while experimental treatments (BMG) were fed with the TMR diet supplemented with 12 g/head/day of BM1259 powder (1 × 1010 cfu/g) separately. Results showed that (1) the average daily gain and dry matter intake of the BMG were significantly higher than those of the COG (p < 0.01), increased by 12.5% and 8.79%, respectively, during the 4–8 weeks after the addition of 12 g/head/day of BM1259; from 0 to 8 weeks, ADG (p < 0.05) and DMI (p < 0.05) in the BMG were significantly higher than those in the COG, increased by 14.9% and 6.04%, respectively. (2) At the end of the fourth week, the apparent digestibility of crude protein and neutral detergent fiber in the BMG was significantly higher than that in the COG (p < 0.05), increased by 5.97% and 6.70%, respectively; at the end of the eighth week, the apparent digestibility of crude protein and neutral detergent fiber was significantly higher than that of the COG (p < 0.01), increased by 5.88% and 10.26%, respectively. (3) At the end of the eighth week, the rumen fluid pH (p < 0.05), MCP (p < 0.05), and acetate (p < 0.05) in the BMG were significantly higher than those in the COG, increased by 9.03%, 19.68%, and 12.74%, respectively; at the end of the fourth and eighth week, NH3-N concentration in the BMG was significantly lower than that in the COG, with a decrease of 21.81% and 16.40%, respectively. (4) At the end of the fourth (p < 0.05) and eighth week (p < 0.05), the glutamate content of the rumen fluid of the Holstein bull calves in the BMG was significantly higher than that in the COG, increased by 13.21% and 14.32%, respectively; at the end of the fourth week, the contents of glutamate in the serum (p < 0.05), urine (p < 0.05), and feces (p < 0.05) of the Holstein bull calves in the BMG were significantly lower than those in the COG, decreased by 25.76%, 33.87%, and 9.23%, respectively; at the end of the eighth week, the contents of glutamate in the serum, urine, and feces of the Holstein bull calves in the BMG were significantly lower than those in the COG (p < 0.01), decreased by 26.69%, 27.94%, and 11.11%, respectively. (5) After adding 12 g/head/day of BM1259, the urine ammonia–nitrogen content of the BMG was extremely significantly lower than that of the COG at the end of the fourth and eighth week (p < 0.01), decreased by 54.60% and 40.31%, respectively. (6) After adding 12 g/head/day of BM1259, there was no significant effect on the level of blood biochemical parameters of the Holstein bull calves. This study demonstrates that BM1259 can be applied as a potential microecologics to improve growth performance, nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation, and nitrogen utilization in Holstein bull calves.
