Abstract
Five experiments concerned with the relations between deprivation and hoarding in albino rats were presented. Experiments 1, 2 and 3 indicated that Ss deprived of food or water for 22 or 23 hours hoarded fewer paper strips than Ss who had not been deprived or had been deprived for short periods. When switched to food hoarding, the food-deprived Ss hoarded more food. Experiment 4 utilized three levels of food deprivation—0, 6, and 23 hours. A curvilinear relation was found, with the six-hour group hoarding more paper than either of the other groups. Experiment 5 tested the effect of water deprivation on food hoarding. A group which was on 23-hour food and water deprivation ho̧arded less food than a group on 23-hour food deprivation and no water deprivation.
