Abstract

In coherent multilayers, the remote spacing of vacancy sources and sinks indicates that Darken’s equations no longer apply. Under these circumstances, after a transient, the diffusivity should drop to that of the slower diffusing component. The magnitude of this effect in comparison with other effects that can retard diffusivity such as sink efficiency and internal stress fields, is discussed.
