Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effects of bladder irrigation on urinary tract infection (UTI) of patients with long-term indwelling catheter, and to provide a reference for identifying whether to provide long-term indwelling catheter and frequency of bladder irrigation. Methods Randomized controlled trail (RCT) data about the effects of bladder irrigation on UTI of patients with long-term indwelling catheter from October 1975 to September 2016 in CNKI, CBM, Pubmed, Cochrane Library and EMBASE were retrieved on the computer, and then analyzed with RevMan 5.3. Results Totally 9 RCTs were taken into consideration, involving 1 722 patients. According to the meta-analysis, bladder irrigation could reduce UTI incidence, and twice a week of irrigation brought the best effect, compared with twice a day and once a day. Conclusions Bladder irrigation can reduce UTI incidence, but needs a proper frequency. Key words: Bladder irrigation; Long-term indwelling catheter; Urinary tract infection; Systematic analysis
