Abstract
IntroductionAdditional antenatal counselling of KMC and NNS improves breastmilk feeding in preterm infants however needs implementation. MethodsThis RCT was conducted in a level III hospital (6 months) to evaluate the effect of antenatal counseling of KMC and NNS on exclusive human milk feeding and growth in preterm infants (intervention group). Outcomes were proportion of neonates discharged on breast feeding + spoon feeding and weight gain. ResultsIn intervention group 53% (35 of 66) were discharged on breast feeding + spoon feeding as compared to 5% (3 of 63) in routine group (p=<0.001). In intervention group, 47% (31 of 66) were discharged on spoon feeding only as compared to 95% (60 of 63) in control group (p=<0.001). Mean weight gain was similar in both groups. ConclusionAdditional antenatal counseling on KMC and NNS improved breastmilk feeding, KMC and NNS rates during hospital stay and at discharge.
