Abstract

38 Aim & Methods: The beneficial effects of fibre on gastrointestinal function are well known but most currently available paediatric enteral feeds do not contain fibre. In order to determine the effects of a new multifibre supplemented enteral feed (Nutrison Paediatric Multifibre, Nutricia) on gastrointestinal function, 16 children (10M,6F) requiring tube feeds entered a double-blind cross over study. The median age of the children was 60 months (range 13-125), 10 had cerebral palsy and 6 had other miscellaneous diagnoses. They were randomised to receive either the multifibre feed or an isocaloric fibre-free feed (Nutrison Paediatric Standard, Nutricia) for 14 days followed by the alternative feed for 14 days. Gut transit time was assessed using a carmine marker. Results: Weight gain was satisfactory and both feeds were well tolerated by all 16 children. With the multifibre feed there was a significant *(p<0.05) reduction in number of days of constipation. Changes in the other parameters assessed were not significant. (Table)TableConclusions: The new multibre supplemented feed is well tolerated by children aged 13-125 months requiring tube feeds and significantly reduces the frequency of constipation.
