Abstract

Background: Inadequacy of breast milk after delivery can be caused by the ineffective breast milk production and ejection. One way that can be done is oxytocin massage to promote breast milk secretion. Purpose: The purpose of current study was to determine the effectiveness of oxytocin massage on lactation among postpartum mothers. Materials and methods: A true experimental research with pre and post test control group was conducted in the host institution of Saveetha Medical College And Hospitals. There were 60 postpartum mothers recruited using purposive sampling technique based on the inclusion criteria by using lottery method, 30 in experimental and 30 in control group. Oxytocin massage was administered for the duration of 20 minutes divided in two sessions both morning and evening for about 3 days .For the control group, routine hospital care was followed. On 3rd postnatal day, the study participants were reassessed for the level of breast milk secretion by using the same breast pump after one hour of the intervention. Results: The study results concluded that, the mean difference score in the experimental group was 62.30 and the calculated t test + = 14.942 was found to be statistically significant at p< 0.001 level which depicted clearly that, there was a significant increases in the level of breast milk secretion after circulation of oxytocin massage in experimental group of post partum mothers. Conclusion: oxytocin massage can be promote the production of breast milk among postpartum mothers.
