Abstract

Most frequently, process synthesis is executed by resorting to mathematical programming. Nevertheless, its most crucial step, i.e., the generation of the mathematical model, has been largely ignored. The present contribution demonstrates that the mathematical model generated in algorithmic process synthesis based on mathematical programming affects profoundly the quality of the solution and the necessary computational time. It has been illustrated that the P-graph framework gives rise to a consistent methodology for generating the mathematical model and its solution.
