Abstract

The tryptone yeast-extract medium used in these studies appeared to contain a dialyzable substance which interfered in some way with the ability of the cells of Micrococcus pyogenes var. aureus to oxidize acetate. In a synthetic medium, glucose produced a similar effect. The inhibited acetate-oxidizing system of the cells was stimulated by succinate or glutamate at pH 7.5 but not at pH 5.5.
