Abstract

Spent Pink Guava Mesocarp (SPGM) meal is the by-product from pink guava beverage manufacturing factory and is high in lycopene. This research was conducted to examine the ability of the laying hen to deposit lycopene, a carotenoid that imparts the pink colour in pink guava, into the egg yolk. All birds were housed individually in commercial cages, had ad libitum access to water and feed throughout the 8 weeks experimental period. The SPGM meal was incorporated into the diets at 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10%. It was found that feed intake, BWG, FCR, egg production improved with the increasing level of SPGM. In egg quality, the egg weight, Haugh unit, shell thickness and yolk colour also increased significantly with the increasing level of SPGM meal.
