Abstract

The effect of sodium chloride (NaCl) on the mechanism of retention of a series of phenoxypropionic acids has been investigated for the first time by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a novel fluorinated stationary phase (FSP). Thermodynamic data relating to retention were determined for a wide range of NaCl concentrations (x). For all the herbicides, the mechanism of retention on the FSP can be divided into two regions of NaCl concentration, depending on whether Cl (region I) or Na+ (region II) has the predominant effect on herbicide-FSP association. This change in the herbicide interaction process was confirmed by an enthalpy-entropy investigation. This dual mechanism was also used to enable better understanding of the process of separation of halogenated molecules on this FSP.
