Abstract

The demand for petroleum based lubricants are increasing progressively and they are in the process of depleting. The use of conventional lubricants is harmful to the environment as their disposal causes more pollution. So, the alternatives are required to replace conventional lubricants. The non-edible oil are the suitable substitutes to them. Their properties could be enhanced by using nanoparticles as an additives. The effect of nanoparticles as an additive to the jatropha oil was studied. The SiO2 nanoparticles are added to the jatropha oil in 0.2%, 0.6%, and 1.0% by weight. The tribological characterization was performed by using pin on disc machine. Different loads were applied and their effect was analyzed. The reduction in friction was observed at 0.2% and 0.6% concentration. The application of SiO2 nanoparticles assisted the lubricant film and also prevents wear of the surfaces during sliding motion. The more amount of wear has occured at 1.0% concentration due to the cluster of the nanoparticles on the surface.
