Abstract

This work was conducted to investigate the effect of induced hypothyroidism on some biochemical parameters in male rabbits.Fifteen rabbits were divided into three groups: a control group, which received tap water only, a low-dose group that received 50 mg/kg propylthiouracil (PTU) orally and a high-dose group, which received 100 mg/kg PTU. Rabbits were dosed daily for three weeks. After the three-week period, the rabbits were sacrificed and blood samples were collected for hormonal and biochemical analysis. The results of the thyroid hormones indicate hypothyroidism. Propylthiouracil caused a decrease in the glucose concentration as well as in insulin levels in the serum of treated rabbits. However, it caused increases in the cholesterol concentration levels. Treatment with PTU had no significant effect on albumin and total protein concentration levels. In view of the changes summarized, the increase or decrease in these parameters arise from the reduction in the level of thyroid hormones which, in turn, affect most of body tissues.
