Abstract

The change in the Curie temperature of GdN with pressure has been measured up to 100 kbar by a transformer method and is given by dTc/dP=+0.08°±0.04°K/kbar. The compressibility has been determined relative to NaCl by powder x-ray-diffraction methods and can be expressed by a Birch equation with B0=1920±350 kbar and ξ=0. The results are compared with EuO: (d logTc/d logV) = −2.2±1.5 for GdN and −5.5±1.5 for EuO. This difference results from the combined effect of the valence difference between the compounds and a difference in the exchange mechanism.
