Abstract

Particle size is one of the basic parameters affecting the separation of heavy minerals. The application of gravity separation at Palabora is considered and the effect of particle size in the units used is examined. Factors such as the effect of wide and narrow size distributions in the feed, the recovery by size characteristics and particularly the recovery of fines are embarked upon. Improvements that have been achieved in the circuit, regarding the size effects in the wet gravity separators, are described to show how paying attention to size effects can enhance metallurgical performance.
