Abstract

Summary Rabbits were injected intraperitoneally with 3 or 6 mg of paraquat/kg/day for a period of 3, 7, and 14 days. The treated rabbits showed a decrease in acidic phospholipids in liver at 3 and 14 days with 3 or 6 mg/kg/day of paraquat treatment. The percentage of total sugar in liver total lipids decreased significntly at 3 days of treatment with 3 mg PQ/kg/day but was little affected in the kidneys. The rtio between saturated fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids of liver decreased at 3 days of treatment with 3 or 6 mg PQ/kg/day. In kidney, this ratio decreased at 3 days in response to 3 mg PQ/kg/day. Histological studies revealed the presence of severe tissue injuries mainly in lungs and to a lesser extent in liver of PQ treated rabbits. These results indicate, contrary to the earlier reports, that rabbits are susceptible to paraquat toxicity with the development of pulmonary fibrosis.
