Abstract

The objective of the paper is to study the effect of negative Poisson's ratio on the crack tip field under the application of external mechanical load and temperature. Explicit and analytical expressions for the fracture mechanics parameters such as stress intensity factors and the energy release rate are obtained. The expressions for the thermal loads are derived in axisymmetric cylindrical coordinates under the framework of steady-state uncoupled linear thermoelasticity. Numerical results are presented graphically to demonstrate the effect of negative Poisson's ratio on the crack tip field. The results show that for the case of applied mechanical loads, materials with negative Poisson's ratio have higher energy release rate. However, if the applied are thermal loads, the crack tip fracture mechanics parameters are significantly decreased.
