Abstract

Selection of rootstocks for dwarfness has been an important aspect of the mango breeding program at Central Region of Brazil. Although 'Tommy Atkins' and 'Haden' mangos are productives with tasteful and fiberless fruits, their trees are vigorous and very tall, which make difficult cultural practices and harvest. The experiment was set up in split-plot design with three replications. Rootstocks, in a total of eight, were used as whole plots and 4 scion cultivars as sub-plots. 'Tommy Atkins', 'Haden', 'Winter' and 'Van Dyke' were used as scion cultivars, while 'Mallika', 'Amrapali', 'Santa Alexandrina', 'Extrema', 'Imperial', 'Maca', 'Comum' and 'Rosinha' were used as rootstocks. The rootstock 'Amrapali' (monoembrionic) reduced tree height in 70 cm, regardless the scion cultivar, and the yield of 'Tommy Atkins' (7.77 t/ha) was much higher when 'Rosinha' was used as rootstock. The objective of this study was to identify the effect of different rootstocks on growth, yield and fruit quality of mango cultivars.
