Abstract

Abstract The effect of water stress on acetylene reduction (symbiotic nitrogen fixation) by Rhizobium japonicum and soybean plants grown in silica sand was evaluated. Optimum water contents for acetylene reduction (nitrogen fixation) by the nitrogenase of the soybean root nodules were 60 to 80% of the moisture holding capacity of the sand.
