Abstract

A study to investigate the effect of a reasonable amount of dietary fish on collagen-induced platelet aggregation and ATP release in citrated whole blood is described. Two groups of twenty healthy male volunteers were given a daily dietary supplement consisting of 135 g of tinned mackerel paste (experimental group) or meat paste (control group) for a 6 week period. Compliance, calculated on the basis of the urinary excretion of lithium which was added to the supplements, was about 80%. The mackerel supplement had a weak but significant inhibitory effect on collagen-induced platelet aggregation (impedance method) and ATP release (firefly assay) in whole blood. Platelet release was significantly related to the compliance.
