Abstract

Abstract Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy has been applied to the study of the local environment of Er, Nd and Hf in LiNbO3 single crystals and the influence of codoping with ≈6% of Mg on the site of the previous impurities. It has been found that the mean distance of the first oxygen shell to Er, Nd and Hf impurities is larger in the samples codoped with Mg than in single doped samples. The presence of a Mg2+ ion close to the Er, Nd and Hf impurities is likely responsible for the variation of the impurity-oxygen distance.
