Abstract
1. ( I) We have examined the effect of two chemicals which inhibit DNA synthesis on UV-sensitive strains of Escherichia coli. 2. ( 2) The wild-type and an Hcr strain were resistant to nalidixic acid (NA) and 5-fluorouracil deoxyriboside (FUDR). Three RecA strains, a RecB and a Lon strain were sensitive to both agents. The sensitivity of an ExrA strain was intermediate. Results with these strains were similar to Cummings and Mondale's results with thymine starvation except that a RecA strain sensitive to NA and FUDR was resistant to thymine starvation.
