Abstract

In this communication, a simple transient analysis of a conventional solar still has been presented by incorporating the effects of water flow over the glass cover and heat capacity of the water mass in the basin. Explicit expressions for flowing water, glass and basin water temperatures and efficiency of the solar still have been derived. Numerical calculations have been carried out for a typical day in the month of May 1987. On the basis of numerical results, the following conclusions have been drawn: (i) the efficiency of the solar still increases with increase of flow rate and (ii) the effect of water flow over the glass cover has a significant effect at large heat capacity of water mass in the basin. The results have also been validated by performing the experiment at the University of Papua New Guinea.
