Abstract

Titanium carbide (TiC) is added to aluminium alloy (Al6061) with various weight proportions of 3%, 6% and 9% using stir casting method. This work investigates hardness and CNC milling surface roughness for three different weight proportion of AA6061 metal matrix composite with 3%, 6% and 9% of TiC. CNC milling operation is carried out with the cutting speed 75 m/min, 85 m/min, 105 m/min (2,500, 3,000 and 3,500 rpm), feed rate (0.3, 0.7 and 0.9 mm/rev) and constant depth of cut (0.1 mm) for the 10 mm slot in three places and it average roughness value were calculated. Finally, it is concluded that the result not only the cutting parameters are given the minimum value, but percentage of material contribution also involved in surface roughness value indicated by the experimental result. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis and energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX) spectrum also carried out for the AA6061 alloy and other 3% TiC with AA6061 composite.
