Abstract

A theoretical analysis to study the effect of fluid inertia on the stability of oil film journal bearings mounted on flexible support using linear perturbation technique is presented. The Navier–Stokes equations have been solved using the parabolic velocity profile. The dynamic coefficients are calculated without neglecting the mass of the oil in the bearing for different length to diameter ratios and modified Reynolds numbers. These are then used to find stability margin for different support parameters to study the effect of fluid inertia.
