Abstract

Summary Field sprays of Bavistin (0.1 %), Blitox (0.5 %), Captan (0.2 %), Difolatan (0.3 %), and Dithane Z-78 (0.2 %) at 12–15 days' intervals up to one month before harvest reduced the seed mycoflora of a local variety of chillies significantly. Alternaria solani, Colletotrichum capsici, Phytophthora capsici, and Curvularia lunata were the most frequently isolated fungi. Alternaria spp. and P. capsici were isolated more frequently in case of Bavistin sprays than in other treatments. Difolatan and Dithane Z-78 sprays were superior to other treatments in reducing the seed-borne fungi. Seed germination in different treatments varied from 73.33% to 81.66% as compared to 62.66 % in unsprayed control.
