Abstract

The utilization of lead acid batteries (LABs) in engineering applications is rapidly increasing day by day. The charging time and the battery temperature are the biggest issue in almost all engineering applications. In this study, characteristics of LABs with different charging / discharging rates are studied under the various ambient pressures. The results show that the charging is fast when the operating pressure is high. At the same time, discharging takes more time when the operating pressure is low. Both the time factors are just opposite to each other. The battery temperature is also studied with various operating pressures. The results show that the temperature of positive / negative terminal goes up when the operating pressure is high / low. Further, charging / discharging at high / low pressure resulted in lower / higher circuit voltage. As the discharging is main concern in all applications, low pressure operating environment, such as 0.8 bar is preferred.
