Abstract
IntroductionCerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive neurological disorder that can affect both gross and fine motor skills limiting quality of life. Bimanual intensive therapy (HABIT) and bimanual intensive therapy including lower extremities (HABIT-ILE) are used to stimulate bimanual coordination through structured movements and activities that require the use of both hands with control of the trunk and lower extremities in children with unilateral spastic CP. The objective of the review is to analyse the scientific evidence of HABIT and HABIT-ILE on manual function in children with CP. Material and methodA systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. Randomised clinical trials and before-after studies focusing on HABIT and HABIT-ILE for the treatment of impaired manual skills in children with CP were selected. We used the tool proposed by the Cochrane Handbook to analyse the risk of bias. The last search was conducted on 3 May 2024. ResultsSignificant improvements were found in bimanual skill performance but not in palmar strength. Combining HABIT or HABIT-ILE with other therapies may improve manual skill outcomes.. ConclusionsHABIT or HABIT-ILE therapy can improve manual function in children with CP, functional Independence and quality of life. Further studies are needed to determine the most effective treatment protocol and the combination with other therapies that may improve outcomes.
